Is my hamster wierd?

We got this hamster a few weeks ago. It is very young so I understand some of these wierd things may have to do with immaturity ...... He made his nest in a vertical tube. He sits there all day. If he ever leaves to get a drink, he runs immedieatly back to it if I come watch. Also, I have read that hamsters always go potty in the same place, well this one does not. I swear he pees in his nest! Today I changed the cage and his fur was all wet looking and he STUNK! I thought hamsters were very clean animals, but this ones has issues I think. Also, he eats his own feces and collects it with the other food he stashes. Besides being very nervous when my kids or I approach it, the peeing thing and the tube thing are very strange to me. I provided one of those hamster homes inside the cage, he preferred the vertical tube. I even put a horizontal tube on the bottom of the cage so he would maybe feel safe there. He still went vertical. Let me know if my hammy has a screw loose!
