Should I go to the dentist?

It took me two doctor's visits before they determined that I had strep throat. Once I started taking penicillin, I discovered that I had an abscess on my gums between two of my teeth. After a day or two, the abscess is gone. Should I go to the dentist? Did the abscess occur from the strep going into my system? or could it just be a coincidence that my teeth are going bad and I should get them check out?
