Are jelly bracelets bad?

I've read things about them like there was kinda a controversy about them a few years ago, but I kind of like them and I've seen ppl wearing the i.e. miley cyrus, etc. I think ashlee simpson... I feel like getting some but I'm afraid of what ppl might think...
